welcome to coated m2a

The Materials and Manufacturing Academy (M2A) commenced in 2015 with the aim of creating the future leaders of Welsh industry through industry sponsored postgraduate research. The M2A builds on over 25 years of experience of delivering Engineering Doctorates and was one of the pioneering centres for the delivery of the Engineering Doctorate qualifications. The M2A has maximised the amount of funding using European Structural Funds to successfully leverage UKRI money with the incorporation of 2 CDTs in Functional Coatings into the operation.

COATED M2A transforms students into a Research Engineers, with enhanced skillsets to solve industrial problems and advancing the academic boundaries of the discipline.

To support our students, all Research Engineers are supervised by both academics and industrialists as well as receiving mentorship from colleagues to guide them through their research and subsequent career.

Research Engineers have all tuition fees covered and will receive a generous stipend to support studies. This stipend does not qualify for deductions (tax, NI, student loan etc.)

  • EngD: £22,000 pa

It is common for our graduates to have rapid career progression as a result of the skills they have gained completing their higher qualification.

As well as the generous financial support, there are many opportunities to network and showcase work at trade events and international conferences around the world.

The EngD is accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining on behalf of the Engineering Council and will count towards your journey to Chartered Engineer Status.
