M2A’s Ebrima, and the College of Engineering’s Black and Minority Ethnic Network (BAME).

Ebrima Sallah joined the M2A in October 2017, having previous studied Biochemistry at Swansea University. Now, studying towards an Engineering Doctorate, Ebrima works with TATA, researching how to improve refractory lining within the steel making process.

Alongside his studies, Ebrima finds time to work towards improving the student/staff experience via his activities with the Black and Minority Ethnic Network (BAME). The group was established in early 2019 and aims to create an inclusive environment and to increase diversity in the College of Engineering.

Initially the group came together in an informal way to contribute and collate ideas into a dossier, eventually leading to the creation of the BAME network.

Ebrima was able to draw upon his network of contacts to solicit both advice and best practice guidance from a former colleague, now working as an Inclusion Officer at a Russell Group University.

Ebrima has been instrumental in the creation and distribution of flyers to publicise the network launch event and to attract others to give of their time through committee membership. A strong professional network has helped in identifying those suitable to take up key positions on the committee.

Ebrima hopes that the interventions such as the career day (talks lead by successful BAME leaders) and sponsorship programme will be the stimulus needed to increase BAME representation both in industry and academia. These activities have broadened Ebrima’s outlook on life, seeking to better himself in all aspects of his career, to be the ambassador needed to create change, empower and inspire others.
